Beverage Mixing

high pressure homogenizer beverage application

Sonic’s Sonolator High Pressure Homogenizer is frequently used for mixing beverages such as fruit juices, soft drinks, flavored milk and more.  The Food & Beverage industry is required to emulsify various components such as soft drink clouds, sugars and syrups, or to disperse and hydrate gums and starches. Emulsifying, dispersing, hydrating and dissolving are all critical processes in the manufacture of a wide variety of beverages globally. Our Sonolator Homogenizer provides an outstanding service by efficiently performing all of these duties. This is done by reducing oil droplet sizes and dispersing powders effectively to give a very smooth appearance.

Sonic homogenization equipment is very beneficial here in that customization is one of our expertise.  We can fit the right pump to your process.  Off-the-shelf homogenizer suppliers force you to use their proprietary PD pump whereas Sonic fabricates systems that employ Progressive Cavity pumps, Sanitary Rotary pumps, hygienic Twin Screw pumps and more.  This gives the customer complete flexibility.  Our customized systems meet 3A and EHEDG requirements where necessary. Ways Homogenization Improves Beverage Quality

  • Less Sedimentation & Separation. You could argue the main reason for homogenization is to break down raw materials into smaller particles. The benefit from that is less sedimentation and separation.
  • Higher Viscosity. Some fruits and vegetables – like oranges and tomatoes – contain the natural stabilizer pectin. When homogenized, the plant cells rupture and release the pectin into the juice, which increases its viscosity and stability.
  • Improved Flavor. Reducing the size of particles obtains a better taste and texture. Many flavors are contained in the plant cells, meaning that they, too, can be released and made useful – this is especially true in vegetable juices.
  • Improved Color. Color is basically a visual perception of bouncing light. Smaller particles scatter light differently than larger ones. Therefore a homogenized beverage appears to be more colorful

The Sonolator High Pressure Homogenizer can bring you even further to provide all of the above while saving on labor and cycle time costs.  One of the ways we do this is through Multiple-Feed, High Pressure Homogenizing.  This is a mouthful, right?

Multiple-Feed High Pressure Homogenizer Systems

The Sonolator is adaptable to what is known as Multiple-Feed Homogenization where several streams are metered independently into our mixing chamber where emulsions and dispersions are formed instantaneously.  No other homogenizer company offers this capability and it makes Sonic Corp truly unique.  We specialize in the customization of process systems, so designing and fabricating complex systems where many streams are brought together at high pressures with tight process controls is everyday business for us.  We specialize in design, fabrication and automated controls that allow for accurate ratio control and metering.

This system here is used to meter water from an independent source, reducing the amount of tank space used to manufacture large quantities of Soft Drinks.  Syrups and other liquid ingredients are fed from bulk storage using additional PD pumps.  The required pressure to homogenize the water with other ingredients was low enough that hygienic progressing cavity pumps were used for all 3 streams.  Operating at 100 GPM at 400 PSI.
